THE MEKONG, AT HUMAN SPEED

Come for
the dolphins.
Stay for the river.

Rare wildlife. Island bicycles. Old riverside houses. Sunsets that stop conversation. Kratie is Cambodia at its most gentle.FOLLOW THE MEKONG ↓

EASTERN CAMBODIA · ក្រចេះ

A small town.
A great river.

Kratie’s riverfront faces west, which means every day ends in gold. The town is compact and calm, with an old market, faded architecture and boats moving between the mainland and long green islands.

It is best treated as a two-night experience, not a dolphin stop: one day upriver around Kampi, one day cycling Koh Trong, and both evenings reserved for the Mekong.

A LIVING NATURAL TREASURE

Watch quietly.
Leave them wild.

The Mekong’s Irrawaddy dolphins are a critically endangered river population, sacred to local communities and important to the health of the river. Kampi’s deep pool north of Kratie is a crucial habitat. A sighting is never guaranteed—and that is exactly how a true wildlife encounter should be.LEARN FROM WWF ↗

DOLPHIN WATCHING, DONE RIGHT

Less noise.
More wonder.

01

Choose local boats

Use the established community operation and follow the boat driver’s instructions.

02

Keep your distance

Never ask a driver to chase, crowd, feed or cut across the dolphins’ movement.

03

Lower the volume

Enjoy the waiting. Quiet observation is better for wildlife and far more memorable.

04

Support the river

Spend locally and learn why fishing gear, habitat loss and pollution threaten this population.

ACROSS THE WATER

Cycle into
island time.

A short ferry ride reaches Koh Trong, a long Mekong island of sandy lanes, fruit trees, farms, wooden homes and extraordinary hospitality. Rent a bicycle, move slowly, buy refreshments locally and ask before photographing people or private homes.

THE TWO-NIGHT RHYTHM

Enough time
to exhale.

ARRIVAL · 16:30

Face the sunset

Check in near the river, walk the promenade and let the Mekong provide the evening’s main event.

DAY 02

Upriver to Kampi

Visit Phnom Sambok, watch quietly at the dolphin pool, taste local sticky rice and return before dusk.

DAY 03

Circle Koh Trong

Cross early, cycle the island loop, eat locally and continue onward after a final river lunch.

THE ROAD EAST

One river stop.
A bigger journey.

Kratie works naturally between Phnom Penh and Mondulkiri or Stung Treng. Road conditions and journey times change, so use reputable daytime transport and avoid designing a connection that leaves no room for delays.
