For a first Cambodia trip, choose seven days for Phnom Penh and Angkor, ten for an active route with Kampot, or fourteen for the cities and island time. The plans below count arrival and departure as travel days: seven days means six nights, ten means nine and fourteen means thirteen. These are suggested routes to adapt, with transport and accommodation booked separately.

The essential first journey

Two cities and two temple mornings. Arrive in Phnom Penh and depart from Siem Reap; see the variation below if both flights use Phnom Penh.

Day by day: 7 days in Cambodia

  1. DAY 1
    Arrive in Phnom Penh

    Phnom Penh · night 1 of 3

Keep the first day for your airport transfer, check-in and a gentle introduction to the riverfront. Choose dinner near your hotel. A late flight simply means starting the sightseeing tomorrow.

    Airport and arrival guide →
  2. DAY 2
    Royal heritage and Khmer food

    Phnom Penh · night 2 of 3

Plan the morning around the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, checking opening arrangements first. Add the National Museum or a market, with lunch and a rest between visits. Keep the evening for Khmer food and a river sunset.

Things to do in Phnom Penh →
  3. DAY 3
Choose your kind of city day

    Phnom Penh · night 3 of 3

Choose Tuol Sleng for a considered introduction to Cambodia’s recent history, or build a lighter day around Wat Phnom, galleries and cafés. Memorial visits deserve time and may not suit younger children. For a social evening, compare rooftops, live music and clubs before choosing a neighbourhood.

    Cambodia after dark →
  4. DAY 4
    Travel to Siem Reap

    Siem Reap · night 1 of 3

Give the transfer its own day. Compare a bus, a private car and any flights operating on your dates using the complete hotel-to-hotel journey. After arrival, settle in, find dinner and confirm your temple transport; avoid a prepaid afternoon tour dependent on an exact arrival.

    Siem Reap city guide →
  5. DAY 5
    Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom

    Siem Reap · night 2 of 3

Start early and choose a manageable circuit with your driver or guide, including Angkor Wat and selected sights around Angkor Thom. Take a proper break in the heat. Sunrise is optional; a comfortable visit matters more than fitting every temple into one day.

    Plan your Angkor visit →
  6. DAY 6
Ta Prohm, then a slower afternoon

    Siem Reap · night 3 of 3

Use a second temple morning for Ta Prohm and a small selection of other sites. Spend the afternoon on craft, a cooking activity or a pool break. Check current performance programmes if you want a final evening out, and reconfirm your airport transfer.

    Cambodian art and craft →
  7. DAY 7
    Depart from Siem Reap

    Departure · no overnight stay

This route assumes your final flight leaves from Siem Reap. Leave time for the airport journey and your airline’s check-in requirement. If your ticket leaves from Phnom Penh instead, use the return-to-Phnom-Penh version below rather than attempting a tight intercity connection on departure day.

14 DAYS · 13 NIGHTS · SUGGESTED ROUTE

Cambodia in full colour

Phnom Penh, Angkor and Koh Rong, with a transit night on the way south and a final city night before flying home. Arrive and depart in Phnom Penh.

Day by day: 14 days in Cambodia

  1. DAY 1
    Arrive in Phnom Penh

    Phnom Penh · night 1 of 3

Allow the first day for arrival and settling in. An easy meal and a short riverfront walk are enough after a long flight. Save the bigger sights for a rested morning.

    Arrival guide →
  2. DAY 2
    Royal Phnom Penh

    Phnom Penh · night 2 of 3

Choose the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, then the National Museum or a market. Confirm opening arrangements and dress respectfully. Leave an unhurried lunch break before a Khmer dinner and an evening by the river.

    Explore the capital →
  3. DAY 3
    History, neighbourhoods and nightlife

    Phnom Penh · night 3 of 3

Choose a thoughtful memorial visit or a day of Wat Phnom, neighbourhood cafés and galleries. Make space around difficult historical material. If you go out tonight, choose a venue and arrange the return journey before leaving your hotel.

    Phnom Penh neighbourhood guide →
  4. DAY 4
    Transfer to Siem Reap

    Siem Reap · night 1 of 4

Travel north and keep the afternoon flexible. Once checked in, confirm the next day’s guide or driver and the ticket you need. A relaxed dinner is a better arrival plan than a rushed temple circuit.

    Siem Reap guide →
  5. DAY 5
    Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom

    Siem Reap · night 2 of 4

Take an early temple morning with a limited route agreed in advance. Balance Angkor Wat and the Angkor Thom area with shade, water and a long break. Return to town with enough energy to enjoy dinner.

    Angkor planning guide →
  6. DAY 6
    Ta Prohm and Khmer creativity

    Siem Reap · night 3 of 4

Visit Ta Prohm and another carefully chosen temple, then spend the afternoon with craft, a cooking activity or your hotel pool. Check current booking arrangements for any workshop or evening performance.

    Art and makers →
  7. DAY 7
    A flexible Siem Reap day

    Siem Reap · night 4 of 4

Use this as a rest day, a third temple day if your pass covers it, or a countryside outing. For Tonle Sap, ask a reputable operator about water conditions, the specific village and the complete price. Keep a town-based alternative if conditions do not suit the trip.

    Tonle Sap guide →
  8. DAY 8
Return to Phnom Penh in stages

    Phnom Penh · transit night

Use a separate travel day to return to Phnom Penh. This breaks up the journey from Siem Reap to the islands instead of depending on a long road trip meeting the last boat. Confirm tomorrow’s mainland pickup, pier and sailing with your hotel and operator.

    Transfer planning checklist →
  9. DAY 9
    Continue to Koh Rong

    Koh Rong · night 1 of 4

Travel to Sihanoukville and take your confirmed boat to the pier serving your accommodation. Agree the full hotel-to-hotel route before booking. If the road journey or sailing does not allow a comfortable connection, stay on the mainland and shorten the island stay.

Choose a beach and island base →
  10. DAY 10
    A full beach day

    Koh Rong · night 2 of 4

Enjoy your chosen beach without another hotel move. Ask your accommodation about current swimming conditions. Leave optional water activities until you know the weather, equipment and operator suit your group.

    Cambodia coast guide →
  11. DAY 11
    Choose one island activity

    Koh Rong · night 3 of 4

Choose one activity offered responsibly by your accommodation or a local operator, then keep the rest of the day free. Check what is included, the return time and cancellation arrangements before paying.

    Island planning tips →
  12. DAY 12
Keep the final island day flexible

    Koh Rong · night 4 of 4

Leave time to enjoy the coast and reconfirm tomorrow’s boat and onward road transfer. If conditions threaten departures, discuss returning to the mainland earlier. A free day gives you room to adapt instead of losing a tightly scheduled excursion.

    Coast and islands →
  13. DAY 13
    Return to Phnom Penh

    Phnom Penh · final night

Take the boat back to the mainland and continue to Phnom Penh. Keep any final shopping or dinner optional. This night separates the island journey from your international flight; it reduces connection pressure but cannot guarantee against disruption.

    Arrange your airport transfer →
  14. DAY 14
    Depart Cambodia

    Departure · no overnight stay

Allow the transfer time and airport check-in margin required for your flight. A later departure leaves room for a nearby café or a short walk, without relying on a distant excursion returning exactly on time.

MAKE THE CONNECTIONS WORK

Plan transfer days before booking activities.

Between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap

Compare the whole journey: hotel pickup, terminal check-in, stops, baggage and the transfer to your next hotel. A flight’s airtime alone is not a fair comparison with a road transfer. Check operating dates directly and leave arrival-day sightseeing flexible.

From Siem Reap to the south

The ten-day route treats Siem Reap–Kampot as a full travel day. The fourteen-day route breaks the journey with a Phnom Penh night. Get pickup, connection details and arrival arrangements in writing before committing to the next hotel.

From the mainland to Koh Rong

Confirm which mainland pier and island stop your ticket uses, and how to reach your accommodation from that stop. Ask your hotel to check the complete connection. Reconfirm the return sailing, baggage rules and weather arrangements with the operator.

Before an international departure

Use the airport printed on your ticket and your airline’s current check-in requirement. Return from the coast the day before, with more margin if conditions or your booking require it. A buffer helps; it is not a guarantee against disruption.

BUILD YOUR OWN TOTAL

What to include in a Cambodia trip budget

Start with six, nine or thirteen hotel nights for the route you choose. Add food for every calendar day, airport transfers, each intercity journey, local transport, admission tickets, guides and activities. For islands, include the boat and any transfer from the arrival pier to your hotel. Check whether each price is per person, room or vehicle.

Angkor ticket check, 6 October 2026: Angkor Enterprise lists a one-day pass at US$37 and a three-day pass at US$62, valid within seven days. For the two Angkor mornings in these routes, one three-day pass costs less than two one-day passes. Guides and transport cost extra. Check official ticket prices ↗

Use actual hotel and transport quotes for your dates rather than treating a general daily allowance as a promised price. Keep a contingency for changed connections and check cancellation terms. The ten-day guide includes a worked budgeting example.

QUICK ANSWERS

Cambodia itinerary questions

Is 7 days enough for Cambodia?

Seven days works for Phnom Penh and Siem Reap if you keep to two bases. Our main route uses three nights in each city, arriving in Phnom Penh and leaving from Siem Reap. If both flights use Phnom Penh, shorten the first city stay and return there on day six.

Should I choose 10 or 14 days in Cambodia?

Choose ten days for Phnom Penh, Angkor and a short Kampot stay if you are comfortable with a long transfer south. Fourteen days gives more room for a slower Siem Reap stay, island time and a return night before departure. Choose the route that fits your flights and pace, rather than adding every region.

Can I include Angkor and Koh Rong in two weeks?

Yes. Our fourteen-day route combines Phnom Penh, four nights in Siem Reap and four planned nights on Koh Rong. It includes a Phnom Penh stop between Siem Reap and the coast, then a final Phnom Penh night before flying home. Check the boat and road connections for your dates before booking hotels.

Should I take an island ferry on the day of my international flight?

Our itinerary returns to the departure city the day before the flight. Boat and road connections can change, so a same-day island-to-international-flight connection leaves little room for disruption. Add more mainland time if your operator or airline arrangements require it.
