PRACTICAL CAMBODIA

Find your Koh Rong.

Start with the beach and the accommodation, then book the boat. A little planning turns the island connection into the beginning of your holiday.

Choose the base before the room.

These are starting points for comparing areas, not guarantees about every hotel or beach. Conditions, development and individual properties change. Check recent information from the accommodation you are actually booking.

Koh Rong Sanloem

This is a separate island, not another beach on Koh Rong. Compare a specific bay and property, including the current pier and any onward transfer. Do not buy a Koh Rong ticket and assume it will serve a Sanloem stay.

Make the boat match the hotel.

Public ferry journeys normally connect through Sihanoukville. GTVC’s official contact page identifies Tourism Pier as its mainland address and lists branches serving several island locations. Your own operator and departure may use particular check-in arrangements.

  1. Send the hotel your arrival plan. Ask for the exact destination to select in the boat booking form.
  2. Confirm the mainland check-in point. Do not rely on a driver recognising only the company name.
  3. Allow room after the road journey. Traffic, stops and terminal transfers can affect the connection.
  4. Ask what happens on arrival. Who meets you, how far is the room, and is the last transfer included?
  5. Plan the return before the last evening. Reconfirm your boat and onward journey, especially in unsettled weather.

We have not verified a single fare or timetable that applies to every pier and date. Check the actual sailing and complete price before committing to accommodation.

Compare stays, then check the details.

Family stay

Confirm beds, child policies, life jackets on transfers, pool arrangements and access to meals. Ask about steps, rough paths and luggage handling if a child or adult needs an easier route.

Resort or private transfer

Ask whether the resort uses a public ferry, a private boat or a combined transfer. Confirm embarkation, luggage limits, the return schedule and weather alternatives directly.

These are researched options from property descriptions, not a personal inspection or a fixed-price offer. Check air conditioning, hot water, Wi-Fi, cancellation terms and the final payable price. Use our budget calculator to include both boat directions and the last transfer.

Give the island a few unhurried days.

Arrival day: settle in, find your room and restaurant, and learn the local beach conditions. Avoid paying for a tightly timed activity immediately after a long connection.

First full day: enjoy the beach and keep the schedule light. Choose optional activities through an operator who explains the equipment, conditions and return arrangements.

Second full day: add one outing if the weather suits, or stay put. Moving beaches or hotels can consume much of the day.

Departure: check the sailing again and keep a mainland buffer before an international flight. Our 14-day route makes space for an island stay and a final Phnom Penh night.

Island questions.

When should I visit?

The drier months usually offer a better chance of suitable beach and boat conditions. The wetter season calls for more flexibility. Check our season guide and confirm current conditions with your hotel and operator.

Can I rely on cards, QR payments and phone signal?

Ask your specific accommodation which payment methods work and what connectivity it provides. Keep a sensible cash backup, downloaded tickets and offline contact details. Coverage on one beach does not establish coverage on another.

Can I take a boat on the day of my international flight?

A separate mainland night reduces the pressure of connecting a ferry, road journey and flight. It cannot remove every disruption risk, but gives more room to adapt.
