PRACTICAL CAMBODIA
Money in your pocket. Cambodia on your phone.
Arrive with a payment backup, a working connection and the information you need saved offline. Set up the essentials before the first long journey.
Use more than one way to pay.
Ask whether the price is in riel or US dollars before paying. Check the amount and any conversion used when paying in one currency and receiving change in another. Keep smaller notes for everyday purchases and agree the fare or complete bill first.
For hotels, restaurants and activities, check card acceptance, any payment surcharge and whether taxes and service are included. Remote accommodation may have different payment arrangements from a city hotel.
At the ATM
- Use an established bank location where you can seek help if needed.
- Read the withdrawal amount, local operator fee and any offered currency conversion before confirming.
- Check your own bank’s overseas withdrawal and exchange charges too.
- Cancel if the complete price is unclear. Keep an alternative card and a modest cash reserve separately.
We have not verified a single foreign-card ATM fee that applies across banks and cards. Check the screen for your transaction rather than relying on an old fee table.
Can visitors use Cambodian QR payments?
Bakong Tourists, from the National Bank of Cambodia, provides a route for international visitors to pay participating KHQR merchants. The official guide describes email registration, with passport and selfie verification to upgrade the account and access card funding.
Check eligible cards, fees, verification and account limits in the current app. A foreign banking app does not automatically support Cambodian KHQR, and not every overseas card is guaranteed to work. Complete a small payment successfully before relying on the wallet for the whole holiday.
Read the National Bank of Cambodia’s tourist guide (PDF) ↗Only download banking or payment apps through official links. Keep a cash or card backup if the connection, merchant or funding method does not work.
Choose a SIM for your actual trip.
Smart lists tourist SIMs for purchase at its international-airport booths. These physical Traveller SIM bundles were checked on 25 October 2026:
| Plan | Price | Data | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | US$5 | 30GB | 15 days |
| Premium | US$10 | 60GB | 30 days |
Check Smart’s current Traveller SIM terms ↗. Compare the complete bundle and activation date; these amounts are not a claim about every operator or eSIM plan.
Prefer an eSIM?
Check that your exact phone model supports eSIM and is not network locked. Smart’s eSIM guidance requires a compatible device, Wi-Fi and valid identity documents. Follow the identity and registration requirements of the operator you choose; check its current guidance before purchase.

Before paying, ask about tethering, calls, top-ups, expiry and coverage at your accommodation. Keep your original SIM available if it receives bank verification messages, and check roaming settings to avoid unintended charges.
Five minutes before you travel on.
- Test mobile data with Wi-Fi switched off.
- Save your hotel address, map pin, booking and contact number offline.
- Download ferry or bus tickets and note the exact check-in point.
- Check the payment method you intend to use and keep a backup.
- Send your arrival plan to your accommodation and save its response.
Ask before submitting passport or account details over a public connection. A hotel’s advertised Wi-Fi is not a guarantee of coverage throughout an island or remote route.
