CAMBODIA’S RIVER CAPITAL
PHNOM PENH · ភ្នំពេញ
At the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac, Phnom Penh carries its past openly while building at extraordinary speed. The contrast is the experience: palace roofs below glass towers, market breakfasts before gallery afternoons, monks and young designers sharing the same streets.
Give it at least two full days. One for the city’s royal, artistic and difficult history; another for neighbourhoods, food, river life and the confidence of modern Cambodia.

THE ROYAL HEART
A CAPITAL IN 48 HOURS
Start with the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, then walk to the National Museum. The museum lists daily hours from 8am to 5pm, with final ticket sales at 4:30pm; check palace access separately.
Visit Tuol Sleng with time for the exhibition and reflection. Choeung Ek is a separate journey out of the centre; add it only if you have the time and emotional space. These are memorial sites, never photo opportunities.
Choose Central Market for its architecture or Russian Market for browsing, then take a car or tuk-tuk to a gallery or a long Khmer lunch. Trying both markets before lunch turns a relaxed morning into a rush.
Keep the afternoon flexible: a river walk, café or boat at sunset. Finish with a Khmer dinner, live music or a rooftop. Families can swap this block for a water-park day north of the centre.
PLAN THE DAYS WELL · CHECKED 6 OCTOBER 2026
The Palace and National Museum sit close together; Tuol Sleng is in another part of the city and Choeung Ek needs a dedicated transfer. In the hotter months, protect the middle of the day for a slower stop. Families can build a separate half or full day around the attractions below.
Confirm current hours and admission with the National Museum and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Tuol Sleng’s official page says it accepts cash in riel or US dollars. Venue hours may change for events or conservation work.
